Techno-feudalism (Yanis Varoufakis) - 13 - can we mortals ever reclaim the power of the cloud-dwelling aristocracy?

(…) Dad, let’s return for a moment to your beloved Hesiod. Besides warning us that every new era shaped by revolutionary technology gives rise to a generation whose members “will never cease to be burdened with toil and miseries by day, nor to be corrupted by night,” Hesiod also bequeathed us a crucial allegory: that of an aristocracy of gods dwelling above the clouds surrounding Mount Olympus, jealously clinging to their exorbitant power over us mortals. By depicting this world as the natural and eternal order of things, Hesiod poses a difficult question to humanity, as pertinent to us as it was to the Iron Age generation: can we mortals ever reclaim the power of the cloud-dwelling aristocracy? And, if we did, would we know what to do with that power? In other words, was Prometheus a fool to steal fire from the gods? And if he wasn't, what would be the task of the modern Prometheus in the age of cloud capital? This is the ultimate question that I will try to answer in the last chapter of this book.

(…) papá, volvamos por un momento a tu querido Hesíodo. Además de advertirnos de que toda nueva era conformada por una tecnología revolucionaria da lugar a una generación cuyos miembros “no cesarán de estar abrumados de trabajos y de miserias durante el día, ni de ser corrompidos durante la noche”, Hesíodo también nos legó una alegoría crucial: la de una aristocracia de dioses que habitan por encima de las nubes que rodean al monte Olimpo, aferrándose celosamente a su exorbitante poder sobre nosotros, los mortales. Al describir este mundo como si se tratara del orden natural y eterno de las cosas, Hesíodo plantea a la humanidad una pregunta difícil, tan pertinente para nosotros como lo fue para la generación de la Edad del Hierro: ¿podremos los mortales reclamar alguna vez el poder de la aristocracia que habita en las nubes? Y, si lo consiguiéramos, ¿sabríamos qué hacer con ese poder? En otras palabras, ¿fue Prometeo un necio al robar a los dioses el fuego de la tecnología? Y, si no lo fue, ¿cuál sería la tarea del moderno Prometeo en la era del capital en la nube? Ésta es la pregunta definitiva que trataré de responder en el último capítulo de este libro.
