Techno-feudalism (Yanis Varoufakis) - 6 - humanity's paralysis in the face of climate catastrophe

Before delving into the final metamorphosis of capitalism, into what I call "techno-feudalism," perhaps it's appropriate to dedicate a few final words... to the US-centered global recycling system (*) that, between the late 1970s and 2008, provided all the props for our current drama: Big Finance, Big Tech, neoliberalism, industrial-scale inequality, not to mention democracies so atrophied that films like Don't Look Up are necessary to explain humanity's paralysis in the face of climate catastrophe. 

 

(*) It's true that the world continued to send most of its profits to Wall Street. But the recycling mechanism had broken down: only a small portion of the money flowing into Wall Street returned in the form of tangible investments in factories, technology, or agriculture. Most of the world's money went to Wall Street to stay there. There it played around, doing nothing useful. As it accumulated, it drove up the stock price, giving the Jills and Jacks of finance one more opportunity to do stupid things on a massive scale.

Antes de indagar en la metamorfosis final del capitalismo, en lo que yo llamo “tecno-feudalismo”, tal vez sea oportuno dedicar unas palabras finales … al sistema de reciclaje global centrado en USA (*) y que, entre finales de la década de 1970 y 2008, aportó todo el atrezo de nuestro drama actual: las grandes financieras, las grandes tecnológicas, el neoliberalismo, la desigualdad a escala industrial, por no mencionar unas democracias tan atrofiadas que películas como No mires arriba (Don’t look up) son necesarias para explicar la parálisis de la humanidad ante la catástrofe climática.

(*) Es cierto que el mundo siguió enviando la mayor parte de sus beneficios a Wall Street. Pero el mecanismo de reciclaje se había roto: sólo una pequeña parte del dinero que fluía hacia Wall Street volvía en forma de inversiones tangibles en las fábricas, la tecnología o la agricultura. La mayor parte del dinero del mundo se dirigía a Wall Street para quedarse en Wall Street. Allí jugueteaba sin hacer nada útil. A medida que se acumulaba, provocaba la subida del precio de las acciones, dando así a las Jills y los Jacks de las finanzas una oportunidad más de hacer estupideces a escala descomunal.
